As you experience the island, keep an eye out for distinct cultural artefacts and stones with different shapes, considered to have a protecting power for the inhabitants. Jeju Island is famous for its picturesque scenery, supply of high quality fresh seafood, and home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. When is good time to visit Jeju?

The good time to visit Jeju is during winter, which is approximately from December to March while there is not really an off-peak season for Jeju Island, the winter months usually have fewer crowds as well as cheaper travel and accommodation fares. Besides, we do not have worry about it being too cold. Thanks to its mild coastal climate and constant circulation of warm currents throughout the island, Jeju-do is actually warmer than the rest of Korea. Even during winter, the weather generally remains mild and the temperature rarely drops below 0 degree Celsius but certain regions do see some snowfall and the island is known for being very windy throughout the year.

Anything else we should know before visit Jeju

Given the island’s isolation, the people of Jeju have developed a culture and language that are different from those of mainland Korea, with many local legends and mystic beliefs.

Natives of Jeju Island speak a dialect of Korean that is very different in vocabularies rather than the accent compared to the standard dialect spoken in the Seoul area. However, all staff in the tourist industry is required to speak standard Korean, so this will not be a problem in places such as bus terminals, the airport, and most districts in the city.

Even if we are fluent in or have basic knowledge of the Korean language, we may find it difficult to communicate with Jeju-do natives as they speak their own dialect there. Even Koreans from other parts of Korea can have a difficult time understanding the Jeju dialect. Do not expect to find many people who can speak English. Prepare in advance to present on your phone or on a piece of paper addresses, destination names, etc. written in Korean.

Here are some simple terms you should know:

  • Honjeo obsseoye : Welcome
  • Annyeong hasukkwa : Hello
  • Jalipsseo : Goodbye
  • Gomabsuda : Thank you
  • Hosseol kkakajubsseo : Please give me a discount

Types of dish

Myeongjin Jeonbok Abalone Restaurant

Located on the eastern side of Jeju Island, Myeong Jin Jeon Bok is probably the most well-known eatery to serve not just only abalone porridge, but an abalone feast.

Not only it is popular among Koreans, it has also become the mandatory eatery for tourists to experience dining like a local. Foods from Jeju mainly made with saltwater fish, vegetables, and seaweed, and are usually seasoned with soybean paste. Salt-water fish is used to make soups and gruel, and pork and chicken are used to make pyeonyuk (sliced boiled meat). The number of dishes set on a table is small and few seasonings are used. And usually, small numbers of ingredients are required to make dishes native to Jeju. The key to making Jeju-style foods is to keep the ingredient's natural flavor. The taste of the food is generally a bit salty, probably because foods are easily spoiled due to the warm temperature. In Jeju, there is no need to prepare Kimchi for the winter as in mainland Korea. It is quite warm during the winter and Chinese cabbages are left in the field. When they do prepare Kimchi for the winter, they tend to make few kinds and small amounts.

  • Seoul Kitchen

Located near the main Seogwipo sightseeing area, this restaurant is serving up as much chicken, beef, and seafood as you can handle! You can opt for different cuts of steak, pastas, salads, or seafood. The atmosphere is very open and bright, and a great place for a leisure lunch before heading on a tour to any of the nearby nature walks. The chicken salad here is nice and light, but still filling, and the steak dishes are also a nice-sized portion. Prices are quite reasonable considering the area does not have many food options, and the quality of their ingredients (beef, chicken, and seafood) is above average compared to mainland Korea

  • Baghdad Cafe

Tourist’s favourite Indian spot of anywhere in South Korea is this delicious café in downtown Jeju City. Down one of the side streets off the main shopping road downtown, visitors will find this small but airy Indian restaurant. They have been serving amazing Indian food in this location for years and everything on the menu is spectacular. They offer the typical Indian dishes like butter curry, palak paneer, sag, chicken tikka, and masala curries. The cooks also cater to vegetarians and the food is certified as halal by the Korean Muslim Federation. The chefs speak English, so they are happy to take any special food or allergy request you may have. They also have house red or white wine on sale here from 5,000 KRW (3.5 USD), which is a steal, to pair with your dinner.
