Local food in Kuching, Sarawak is one of the things every traveler or visitor must try when you are here. The choice are totally different from West Malaysia and Sarawakian Food in very unique in their own ways. Usually in Kuching town, especially around the Waterfront area, i would explore new restaurants and cafes in search for some exotic Sarawakian food such as:
1. Sarawak Laksa
2. Kolo Mee
3. Satay
4. Nasi Lemak
5. Mee Jawa
NO. 1 SARAWAK LAKSA
Sarawak Laksa is one of the most important signature dishes in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia in the island of Borneo. The prime ingredient is a paste made from a wide range of ingredients. It has a soup base of sambal belacan, which contribute to its crimson coloring, adding coconutmilk and sour tamarind, garlic, lemon grass, topped with omelette strips, chicken strip, prawns, freshly coriander leaves, and optionally lime. Ingredient such as been sprouts, fried tofu or other seafood are not traditional but are sometimes added. Sarawak Laksa is unique in that it is a fushion between Penang Assam Laksa and The Curry Laksa. It is both Tamarind bared and coconut milk based. It is not as greasy as curry laksa and it is not as sourish as the assam laksa.
The best Laksa in town that we suggest is Poh Lam Laksa, which selling in Chong Choon Cafe and located at 331, Jalan Abell, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. As the clock 7.00 am, patrons flock to Poh lam Laksa, Kuching's most popular laksa stall. The laksa come in two sizes, which are medium (RM 5) and large (RM 6), in which the latter comes with bigger prawns. It is served with the softest strands of rice vermicelli noodles, a signthat they were blanched well, which separated nicely instead of being bundled up when i pulled them up with chopsticks. The laksa comes with chicken shreds and bean sprouts, and topped with coriander leaves.

It was one of the Sarawak delicacy noodles dish is characteristically
light and tossed in a transparent sauce, red sauce and dark soy sauce. Mostly
it will be served with bowl of wanton soup. It was very authentic and unique
for Sarawak people.it was very chewy and nice aroma. Kolo mee is Sarawakian Chinese
favourite. It is served anytime of the day like for breakfast, lunch or even
supper.
As
ingredient, Kolo mee is distinguished from other Asian noodle dish recipes. The
difference between Kolo Mee and Wantan Mee, which is popular in the Peninsula
Malaysia, is that Kolo Mee is not drenched in dark soy sauce and water is not
added to the noodles when served. As curly noodles was produce by local factory
and 100% gurantee origin and satisfy for people. Kolo mee
comes in three common flavours: plain, seasoned with red sauce and dark soy
sauce can enhance its saltiness and sweetness of flavor. As Malay people also have own version and replaced it with slice beef or chicken.
By the
way, the noodles came with a generous filling of minced meat ( Pork ).
The kolo mee is topped with spring onion and fried onion, giving the dish a
sweet crunchiness.Beside that, it also served with topping seafood which makes
people got additional choice as well. It was attractive because can make
satisfaction for people and makes Sarawak people miss the flavor of hometown. The best Kolo Mee that we suggest is Kim Joo Kolo Mee which located at No. 73, Ewe Hai Street,Carpenter Street, Kuching, Sarawak. It normally operation time is 6:30am to 2pm. NO. 3 SATAY
Satay is one of the famous local dishes in Malaysia which is very easy to find it in every places as long as there is the place of business. Like Kuching City in Sarawak, everywhere we go, we will find the satay stall. Cafe and restaurant also serve the satay in their menu as a dessert. Satay is the grilled barbecued and skewered meat which is served with the combination of soy and peanut sauce and called as a satay sauce. Satay also very famous in around the world such as in other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Thailand, and also in Sri Lanka. This delicious dishes have many flavour which is chicken satay, beef satay, lamb (mutton) satay, and also have the pork satay which is served by non Malay in Malaysia. To accompany the satay as well, there is Nasi Impit (rice cubes), "Ketupat", and also "Sambal" which is the Malay food and now become favourite to every single netizen of Malaysia. In other way to get the nice taste is also eat with the Mee Sapi. During the football match season like World Cup, the football fans will go to the Warung Makan ( food stall) to watching together the live broadcast matches and make satay as a first menu on the table.

It is another humble place that offers great satay at an fairly affordable price. Each stick is not only well marinated overnight, but is grilled to absolute perfection as well. Customers can choose from a variety of chicken, beef or lamb, all of which is unique to its own flavour. For added carbs, a series of deliciously soft lemang are available as well.
NO. 4 NASI LEMAK
Nasi Lemak is a Malay cusine and also title as the National dish. It is a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. Nasi Lemak was mentioned as one of the 10 healthy International breakfast food by Times Magazine. This cuisine is also popular in Singapore, Brunei, and Southern Thailand. Nasi Lemak is also popular in parts of Indonesia such as Sumatra, Riau Island, and Medan. Traditionally, Nasi Lemak is served with hot spicy sauce(Sambal), various garnishes like cucumber, small fried anchovies(Ikan bilis), roasted peanut, and hard bolied egg. The Nasi Lemak started off as a farmer's meal after a long day in the field that help them to fill their stomach with a dish ready for on-the-go eating. Usually Nasi Lemak is sold at hawker food centre and rood sides stall in Malaysia and Singapore. Ths cuisine was originated in Malaysia, arguably a typical Southern and centre Pennisular Malaysia breakfast and considered Malay origin because of the popularity of the dish. Nasi Lemak has many version given of many diversity in the country. First one is Traditional Malaysian version, follow by Malaysian Indian version, Malaysian Chinese version and finally the Indonesian Riau version. The best nasi lemak that we suggest is the nasi lemak that sell at Lima. Tujoh Cafe and located at 57 Upper, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak.
NO. 5 MEE JAWA
Mee Jawa also called as Mi Jawa or Bakmi Jawa in Indonesia, or Mee Jawa in Malaysia. Mee Jawa is made of yellow noodle, chicken, vegetables, egg and spices. There are slightly different between Mee Jawa in Indonesia and Mee Jawa in Malaysia. This dish soup taste suited to Javanese taste, which is more spicy and slightly sweet. In Malaysia, it is believed that the dish was brought by the Javanese immigrant community during the early 19th-century in Malaysia. The recipe of Mee Jawa in Malaysia differ by the addition of sweet potato base sauce into the dish. The main ingredients of the dish consists of bean curd, beansprouts, hard boiled egg, ground peanuts and optionally, fried shallots or shrimp. The best Mee Jawa that we suggest is selling in Syn Wah Hui Cafe and located at Jalan Main Bazaar. Normally their operation time is from 7am to 12pm.
